Midsommar Scripts
Two scripts for the A24 movie Midsommar. Each script explores a different design and typesetting approach. Special care was put into using a typographic system to separate character names, dialogue, actions, scene headings, and scene descriptions. They each utilize graphic design to create different reading experiences and includes a personally designed typeface.
The first script utilizes a formal and ordinary reading experience. Midsommar primarily takes place within a Swedish countryside. The typeface Adobe Caslon and ornaments were carefully utilized to pair with the movie setting’s beautiful, enchanting, and wild nature.
The second script was designed to respond to Midsommar’s theme of cult-like influence through an evocative design. By utilizing a personally crafted typeface, titled Solstice, the character’s typeset names and dialogue have transformed when motives of indoctrinating outsiders are in play. Near the end, we discover the outsiders themselves have become an influence on one another to participate in the cult’s hidden agenda.
Solstice’s typeform has been inspired by Nordic runes and prominent features within Midsommar. Solstice has been paired with Avenir, a swedish mechanical typeface, to contrast the countryside’s remote setting with the modernism of swedish urban cities.
