Butterfly De-Installation

This installation is an interactive ephemeral intervention of space using origami butterflies.

Passersby are instructed to pluck an origami butterfly, which can be unfolded and reconstructed to reveal a set of RISO printed instructions. The 200 butterflies are staked in the ground as pieces of a larger pattern on Appalachian State University’s campus.

The instructions have been refined through a series of user testing. By doing so, the act of reconstructing the butterfly has been simplified as much as possible.
